Anutin Chanvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of Thailand after successfully forming a coalition government with support from the People’s Party.

According to The Nation Thailand, the coalition’s backing enabled Anutin to secure more parliamentary support than his rival, Chaikasem Nitisiri of the Pheu Thai Party, paving the way for him to lead a minority administration.

Although the new government lacks an outright majority in Parliament, the coalition's success in rallying key support marks a significant political shift. Anutin’s appointment signals a new chapter in Thai politics, with his party expected to play a central role in shaping national policy.

Before officially taking office, the appointee must receive royal endorsement. Thailand's serving House Speaker Wan Muhammad Nor Matha will now move to submit Anutin’s name to the Thai monarch for formal approval although this is expected to be a formality. Once the royal endorsement is granted, Anutin will then be sworn in and move forward with the formation of his Cabinet.

The coming weeks are likely to focus on Cabinet appointments and policy direction as Anutin’s government prepares to take on pressing national challenges, the report says.
