Number of natural monopolies in Uzbekistan drops to lowest number in three years

There were 131 natural monopolies in Uzbekistan as of November 1, the lowest number since 2017, according to data held by the Uzbek antimonopoly committee.

A natural monopoly is a monopoly in an industry in which high infrastructural costs and other barriers to entry relative to the size of the market mean the largest supplier in the industry, often the first supplier to serve the market, obtains an overwhelming advantage over potential competitors.

In October, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev unveiled the country’s biggest ever privatisation programme. It is to provide for the sale of stakes in 620 state-owned companies.
