More than 2,000 evacuated from Iran via Azerbaijan

Dutch and Algerian embassy staff have been evacuated from Iran into Azerbaijan through the Astara border crossing on March 10, as the total number of people evacuated via the route since the start of the conflict reached 2,097, Report news agency reported.

Four Dutch embassy staff, including the ambassador, and nine Algerian embassy personnel crossed into Azerbaijan after completing the required documentation and registration procedures at the border point.

A further 14 people were evacuated between 12:00 and 14:00 local time on March 10, including five Azerbaijani nationals, five Chinese citizens, two Americans, one Russian and one Finnish national. Between 09:00 and 12:00, 17 people had crossed, among them eight Chinese nationals, eight Azerbaijanis and one Canadian.

From 08:00 on February 28 to 10:00 on March 10, a total of 2,097 people from 69 countries have been evacuated from Iran through Azerbaijan, of whom 365 were Azerbaijani nationals.

The largest groups among foreign nationals were 620 Chinese citizens, 292 Russians, 174 Tajiks, 137 Pakistanis and 57 Omanis.

Nine British nationals from the Tehran embassy were among those evacuated through the Azeri route.

Other nationalities included citizens of Italy, Indonesia, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Japan, France, Germany, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Hungary, Poland and Mexico, among dozens of others spanning every continent.

Azerbaijani authorities said the evacuation process was continuing in stages throughout the day in accordance with established security procedures.
