Israel's Air Force launched a series of strikes in southern and eastern Lebanon targeting Hezbollah facilities on December 18, on the eve of a ceasefire monitoring committee meeting, Agence France-Presse reported.

Lebanon's National News Agency reported several strikes by "enemy aircraft" on areas in southern Lebanon, some far from the Israeli border, and mountainous areas in Bekaa Governorate.

The Israeli army said it struck "Hezbollah military buildings used to store weapons from which Hezbollah operatives had recently operated".

The military indicated it targeted a "Hezbollah terrorist" in the strike on the southern border town of Taybeh.

The National News Agency reported the strike occurred whilst a truck belonging to Electricity of Lebanon Corporation and workers were present at the site, resulting in injuries and two burnt vehicles.

Two people were killed on December 16 in strikes targeting a truck south of Beirut and a car in southern Lebanon, with Israel saying the strikes targeted Hezbollah operatives.

Nearly 340 people have been killed in Israeli air strikes in Lebanon since the ceasefire came into effect more than a year ago, according to a tally compiled by AFP based on Ministry of Health data.

Lebanese authorities approved a plan to disarm Hezbollah in implementation of the agreement, which the army has begun implementing, with the first phase covering the border area with Israel south of the Litani to be completed by year-end.

Israel has increased air strikes in recent weeks, accusing Hezbollah of rebuilding capabilities and questioning the Lebanese army's effectiveness.

The escalation comes before a ceasefire monitoring committee session scheduled for December 19, which will include two civilians, one Lebanese and one Israeli, in the first direct talks between the countries.

The monitoring committee includes Lebanon, Israel, France, the United States and the United Nations.

A meeting discussing Lebanon's situation will be held in Paris on December 18, with participation from the Lebanese army commander and American officials, as Paris and Washington pressure Beirut to accelerate Hezbollah's disarmament.

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri described the Israeli strikes as "an Israeli message to the Paris conference dedicated to supporting the Lebanese army".
