A team led by Ilker Aiji, chairman of Turkish Airlines between 2015-2022, is to work on business reform at Uzbekistan Airways.

On December 14, Aiji presented his vision for the transformation of the national carrier to Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

Under the leadership of Aiji, Turkish Airlines went from regional player to global player status in the air passenger transportation market, Mirziyoyev’s press office noted.

"Uzbekistan Airways faces similar challenges today. There are plans to turn our country into an international transport hub, effectively using its geographical location and aviation infrastructure," it added in a release.

The development strategy for Uzbekistan Airways will see the airline introduce corporate governance systems based on international experience, expand its aircraft fleet, improve quality of service and expand cargo transportation. With the involvement of foreign investors, the privatisation of the airline is to be completed.

"We are 10 years late in this area. The airline operates in the old way, passengers are dissatisfied with the quality of service. If we want to develop our economy and tourism, this is our only path," Mirziyoyev said.
