Turkey’s central bank expected to stay put at September 10 rate-setting meeting

The value of the transfer of English football forward Mason Greenwood to Fenerbahce (Istanbul/FENER) made the arrival of the 24-year-old in Turkey’s Super Lig the most expensive in this year’s Turkish summer window for soccer player moves, data compiled by Reuters showed on September 2.
In July, the Istanbul club secured the signature of Greenwood when he moved from French club Olympique de Marseille for a fee of €39mn, (GBP 33mn). Fenerbahce will pay the sum in three equal instalments across three years. Greenwood has signed a four-year contract.
In recent years, Turkey has entered into something of a battle with Saudi Arabia to achieve football prestige, with the big spending of several of its clubs regularly in the headlines.
Greenwood netted 37 goals in 66 league appearances during his two seasons in France’s Ligue 1.
His former club Manchester United is set to recoup upwards of GBP 10mn from the transfer to Fenerbahce owing to a lucrative sell-on clause negotiated during his 2024 departure. Greenwood, a graduate of United’s youth system, was in October 2022 charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour. Four months later all charges were dropped. United opted to loan him to Spain’s Getafe in August 2023, from where he went to Marseille.
‘Fener’ have also paid GBP 5mn for Italian club Napoli’s Belgian international Romelu Lukaku.
The acquisition of forward Leandro Trossard by Besiktas (Istanbul/BJKAS), from English Premier League champions Arsenal for GBP 15mn was registered as the second most expensive Turkish Super Lig transfer in the summer window for the 2026/27 season.
Trabzonspor (Istanbul/TSPOR), meanwhile, signed experienced stars Mohamed Salah and Fabinho on free transfers.
Galatasaray (Istanbul/GSRAY), which broke the Turkish transfer record by paying €75mn to Napoli for Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen last year, had to slam on the financial brakes this season.
In February, Fener paid €14mn to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad for French midfielder N'Golo Kante. It also paid €5.5mn to the footballer for the second half of the 2025/26 season and it will pay a full salary of €11mn for the next two seasons.
Fener, Galatasary, Besiktas and Trabzonspor are known as the Turkish Super Lig’s ‘Big Four’.
