While Chinese manufacturer BYD already pulled ahead of Tesla in production volume last year, with 1,777,965 battery electric vehicles (BEV) produced in 2024 (4,500 more than Tesla), the American manufacturer remained ahead in sales: 1.79mn units sold for Tesla compared to 1.76mn for BYD. But in the course of the year 2025, BYD seems to have clearly gained the upper hand over its rival, becoming the sole global sales leader in this sector of the automotive industry.
As shown by the latest data released by the two manufacturers, BYD's cumulative sales of pure electric vehicles reached approximately 1.61mn units from January to September 2025, compared to 1.22mn units for Tesla during the same period. This gives BYD a considerable lead for the current year, with approximately 388,000 more vehicles than its American rival. While BYD is expected to easily exceed 2mn sales for the first time in 2025 (after recording more than 500,000 sales in the fourth quarter of 2023 and 2024), Tesla needs to increase its sales in the coming fourth quarter by more than 50% compared to Q4 2024 in order to reach this milestone.
