Albanias retail sales index fell by 6% y/y in the first quarter of 2011, the state statistics institute INSTAT said. The index declined for the fourth quarter in a row pushed down by weak domestic demand. The first-quarter decrease was driven by lower household equipment sales (16% y/y), food, beverages, tobacco sales in specialized stores (7.1% y/y) and sales of pharmaceutical products (5.2% y/y). An annual decline of 1.8% was registered in clothing and footwear retail sales and in the trade and maintenance of motor vehicles. On the other hand, the sales in the group of books, newspapers, and stationery picked up 7.1% y/y in January to March 2011, while retail trade in non-specialised food stores increased by 0.6% y/y. In quarterly terms the overall index decreased by 12.3%.
