Albania sends peacekeeping contingent to Afghanistan.

The Albanian army has sent the Eagle 6 contingent to Afghanistan as part of a NATO-led mission, the defence ministry said in a statement. The contingent includes 50 trained troops who will be deployed in Afghanistans second largest city of Kandahar, replacing Albanias Eagle 5 troops. Albanian armed forces have also sent a strong contingent of 107 to Herat. Albania has reinforced its military presence in Afghanistan in December 2009 following in the steps of the US authorities. The Balkan country plans to continue its participation in peace keeping missions in Afghanistan after 2014. Albania currently takes part also in the UNs MINURCAT mission in Chad. The mission in Iraq under the NATO command ended in 2009.
