When a government minister says they’re moving a project into the “fast lane”, they might expect nods of approval. Not in Abdulkadir Uraloglu's case. Turkey’s transport minister has just issued a public apology after receiving a speeding ticket for driving 225 km per hour (140 mph) on a highway — nearly twice the legal limit.
Uraloglu, subjected to ridicule on social media, scored rather low for self-awareness and sensitivity while racing through the speed restriction – the minister posted a video of himself driving with a soaring speedometer, with the clip set to folk music and containing boastful speeches made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about progress on national infrastructure. At the same time, Uraloglu’s car is seen racing past others on the Ankara–Nigde motorway.
Traffic police hit Uraloglu with a fine of 9,267 lira ($280).
Uraloglu posted an image of the ticket on social media platform X, with the message: “Apologies to our nation.”
Last year, 6,351 people died in towards 1.5mn road accidents in Turkey, according to official data.
The maximum speed limit on highways in Turkey is 140 kmh (87 mph).
