The Warsaw Stock Exchange's blue-chip index WIG20 reached 3,920.26pts at the close of the July 31 trading session, its highest-ever closing level, sitting just over 20 points shy of its all-time intraday high.

"The previous record was set on October 29, 2007, when the index closed at 3,917.87 points. This means that the WIG20 has once again reached levels not seen in nearly two decades, confirming the very strong health of the Polish stock market. It is worth noting that on the same day, October 29, 2007, during intraday trading, the WIG20 also reached its all-time high of 3,940.53 points," the WSE said in a press release.

The WSE's widest index WIG set yet another all-time high, closing at 147,400.90pts, up by 0.42% on the day. The mid-cap index mWIG40, which broke its all-time record set on July 30, closed at 10,249.46pts, up by 0.8%.

"New records were also set by the broad-market WIG index (+1.33%) and the mWIG40 index, which comprises mid-cap companies (+0.92%). The undisputed star of the domestic market was XTB, which closed 8.64% higher following the release of its earnings report. The index comprising the smallest companies - the sWIG80 - performed the worst; after heavy selling early in the session, it closed up 0.18%," noted DI Xelion analyst Michał Poleszczuk.

Stock trading volume approached PLN3.60bn (€835mn), of which over PLN3.16bn were traded on the WIG20. The main driver was market activity in Poland's largest convenience retailer Grupa Żabka, whose shares saw trading volume of PLN937mn.

"Trading in Żabka shares was driven by reports that yet another entity - following the Japanese, this time from Canada - is interested in acquiring the company for $8.7bn in a tender offer priced at PLN32 per share," commented DM BOŚ analyst Adam Stańczak, as cited by the Parkiet daily.

The July 31 session also pushed the month of July's total gain to 9.28%, the index's highest monthly growth since January 2025, he added.

"With today's close around 3,920.26 points, the index is just 2 percent away from testing resistance, while the WIG20's daily volatility - measured by the 14-session ATR - stands at approximately 1.4%. Given the strong performance of the underlying markets - broadly defined to include everything from stocks to commodities to currencies - the 4,000-point level appears achievable within the next few trading sessions," Stańczak concluded.

Ytd, the main indices of the Warsaw bourse have gained: WIG +25.73%, WIG20 +23.12%, mWIG40 +25.27% and sWIG80 +3.90%.
