Bangladeshi diplomatic officials confirmed ongoing discussions regarding a potential visit to India by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, though authorities emphasised that favourable conditions must first be established before any official trip can be scheduled, The Hindu reported.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson A.K.M. Shahidul Karim said bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India deteriorated following a media address delivered in New Delhi on August 5, 2026 by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, whose remarks strained ties between the two neighbours. Hasina has been in exile in India ever since her ouster from power by violent student protests in August 2024.

Bangladesh's government has formally requested that India extradite Hasina, along with individuals implicated in the death of student activist Osman Hadi, as part of efforts to address the diplomatic fallout stemming from the incident.

The Foreign Ministry's comments suggest any prime ministerial visit to India remains contingent on progress in resolving these outstanding issues, particularly around the extradition request, before formal travel plans can move forward.

The diplomatic strain adds to a broader pattern of tension between Dhaka and New Delhi in recent months, with Bangladesh continuing to press India on matters tied to Hasina's presence and public statements from Indian territory, while both governments navigate the path toward normalising high-level engagement.
