Iran’s Supreme Leader has been confirmed killed in an attack on his office in Tehran, Iranian state television and state news agencies have now reported.
Reports across Iranian state media are calling the death of the leader one of the most consequential developments in the Islamic Republic’s history. The Tasnim News Agency said the incident occurred inside the leadership compound while he was carrying out official duties and that the "Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei was martyred in the Saturday (February 28) attack by criminal US-Israeli forces."
In a somewhat contradictory statement, Iranian authorities are also understood to have denied claims from foreign officials that the leader’s death resulted from strikes by the United States and Israel, sources indicate.
State media has also reported that several of the leader’s close family members - including a daughter, a son-in-law, a daughter-in-law and a grandchild - were killed in the same incident, citing official sources. The confirmation of the Supreme Leader’s death marks a significant inflection point for Iran’s political order, with questions immediately raised about succession, domestic stability and the trajectory of regional tensions.
In response to the killing, the government as is, has announced seven days of public holidays and 40 days of national mourning. The incident comes amid the ongoing military confrontation with Israel, the United States and states from around the Middle East.
Earlier reports had circulated suggesting that senior Iranian security figures, including Ali Shamkhani, a close adviser and former head of the Supreme National Security Council, were killed in the wider series of strikes on Tehran.
Separately, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has issued statements claiming retaliatory actions against regional targets.
Further reports suggest that 30 to 40 senior Iranian officials may have been killed or wounded in the attacks, including the president, one of Khamenei’s sons, top commanders, and close advisers, though these figures have not been officially confirmed. It is believed these deaths occurred during Israeli and US strikes on Saturday, February 28 and into Sunday, March 1.
