Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi met US President Donald Trump at the White House on July 14, the Iraqi prime minister's media office said, as the Iraqi leader began a seven-day official visit to Washington.

Al-Zaidi arrived in the US capital heading a high-level delegation that includes ministers, senior officials, investors and business leaders aming significant disruptions across the Gulf region as Iran and the US continue to strike each others military bases and sensitive sites.

During their meeting, Trump announced that the US would unveil a major oil partnership with Iraq next, "Next week we will announce a major oil partnership with Iraq," Trump said, adding that "large commercial deals" would also be concluded.

Trump described Iraq as "a strong partner" and praised al-Zaidi, saying he was "doing a great job" and would remain prime minister "for a long time."

He also said Washington would no longer require a military presence in Iraq, saying, "We have a strong partnership with Iraq, and we will not need our army in Iraq or a military presence."

Referring to Iran, Trump said it was "a major burden on Iraq" and added that "we will get rid of it soon."

Al-Zaidi thanked Trump for the warm welcome and said the visit aimed to deepen bilateral ties.

"Our visit to Washington is not a routine one. It comes to announce a strategic partnership and the entry of American companies into the Iraqi market," he said.

On oil policy, al-Zaidi said Iraq, a founding member of OPEC, deserved a fairer production allocation.

"We are one of the founding members of OPEC, but we want a fair share because we fought terrorism in a costly war that devastated our infrastructure," he said. "We need a fair oil production quota for Iraq."

The Iraqi prime minister said Iraq's security forces would assume full responsibility after the international coalition's mission ends in September 2026.

"The government will continue to ensure that all weapons remain under state control," al-Zaidi said, adding that "the government will cooperate with groups that choose to engage in the political process."

He said, "Iraq's losses from terrorism have exceeded $400bn, and we have a plan to return the remaining displaced people to their homes," adding that Iraq was working with the United States to strengthen economic cooperation.

"We came to Washington to discuss the future of the relationship with the US," the Iraqi prime minister said.

On relations with the Kurdistan Region, al-Zaidi said, "I cannot cut off a part of my body," adding that "The Kurdistan Region is an essential part of Iraq."
