Thailand has taken decisive diplomatic action in response to a landmine explosion along its contested border with Cambodia, recalling its ambassador from Phnom Penh and ordering the expulsion of Cambodia’s representative in Bangkok, according to The Nation. 

The announcement was made by Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who described the move as a significant downgrading of diplomatic ties between the two neighbouring nations.

The measures follow an incident in which Sergeant Major Pichitchai Boonkorat of the Thai army suffered the loss of his right leg after stepping on a landmine in the Huai Bon border region of Ubon Ratchathani province—an area whose territorial status remains disputed.

The explosion occurred at around 4:55 PM, with the injured soldier being evacuated approximately 20 minutes later. Intelligence from the Ministry of Defence, conveyed through Deputy Defence Minister General Natthapol Nakpanich, indicated that the device had recently been planted.

In a forceful response, Thai authorities have also mandated the immediate closure of all border crossings administered by the 2nd Army Area, effectively suspending tourist movement through these checkpoints.

Phumtham, who also holds the position of Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Minister of the Interior, confirmed that the government had carefully reviewed the matter before deciding to downgrade diplomatic relations.

“As part of this decision, Thailand will recall its ambassador to Cambodia, and Cambodia’s envoy will be requested to return home,” he said. Further deliberations regarding the future of bilateral relations are expected.
