Poland is bracing for an extreme heat wave that forecasters expect to peak on June 28, with temperatures in the west and parts of central Poland likely to reach 38C-40C and possibly challenge the country’s all-time heat record.

The heat has been building since mid-week, with warnings from IMGW, Poland’s state-run meteorological services, covering most of the country.

Temperatures are expected to climb to 30C-34C on Thursday and Friday, exceed 30C across most of Poland on Saturday, and reach up to 38C locally before the hottest air arrives at the end of the weekend.

According to the ECMWF, the European weather forecast service, Sunday could bring 40C in western Poland, while similar values may shift toward central regions on Monday.

The RCB government security centre warned that the heat wave will affect almost the whole country by June 29 as the school year ends and the summer holiday season begins.

The services put the fire brigade and police on standby in areas with heavy tourist traffic, while the authorities warned that drought, extremely low forest humidity and wind had made the fire risk in forests critical.

The heat could also test a record that has stood for more than a century. Poland’s highest officially recognised temperature was 40.2C, recorded on July 29, 1921, in Prószków near Opole.
