OMV Petrom said on June 15 it will build a large-scale solar and battery storage project in Bulgaria, in a further expansion of its renewable energy portfolio in Southeast Europe.

The Romanian oil and gas group has taken a final investment decision (FID) for the Gabare Solar Project, a hybrid facility combining around 415 megawatt-peak (MWp) of photovoltaic capacity with a battery energy storage system (BESS) capable of storing about 600 megawatt-hours (MWh).

Total investment in the project is estimated at around €300mn, according to the press release.

The project, located in the Byala Slatina region of northern Bulgaria, will be developed through Dunav Solar Plant OOD, in which OMV Petrom holds a 50% stake, alongside renewable energy firm Enery, which owns the remaining share.

OMV Petrom said around €100mn of the total investment will be allocated to the battery storage component, underscoring its push to integrate flexibility solutions into its renewable generation assets.

“Our first battery storage project marks an important step in the development of a modern energy portfolio, where renewables and flexibility solutions complement each other,” said Franck Neel, OMV Petrom executive board member responsible for gas and power.

He added the project expands the company’s regional footprint beyond Romania.

The Gabare project is already fully permitted and classified as ready-to-build, with construction expected to begin following the signing of the construction contract. First production is planned for 2028.

OMV Petrom said it has already secured a power purchase agreement (PPA) for 50% of the future output of the solar park.

Beyond renewables, the company operates 93 fuel stations in Bulgaria and has expanded into natural gas sales to non-household customers through its local subsidiary since 2024.
