Lindian Resources begins work at its Kangankunde Rare Earths Project in Malawi

Lindian Resources (Lindian), an Australian mining company, has started early-stage works at its Kangankunde Rare Earths Project (Kangankunde) in Malawi.

The on-site works mark a milestone in its quest to deliver what it describes as one of the globe's most significant undeveloped rare earths assets, the ASX-listed firm said in a release on April 11. This forms part of a broader acceleration strategy to de-risk phase one construction and fast-track development.

In February 2025, Lindian started constructing a 5km road to Kangankunde.

Activities completed include the building of product storage areas and management site offices. Mining and project equipment is now on site too.  The road project is ahead of schedule and is set to be completed by June 2025, said the firm, which also has bauxite projects in Malawi's northern neighbour, Tanzania, and Guinea in West Africa.

More than 70% of the current jobs at Kangankunde are held by locals.

"By assembling a seasoned construction team and collaborating with skilled contractors to optimise initial infrastructure development, we are establishing a strong groundwork for effective project execution," commented Lindian's chair of project delivery Zac Komur.

"Through collaboration, best practice efficiencies and on-site management the current road works are ahead of schedule allowing for the company to utilise equipment and skilled personnel, delivering pre-development time and significant cost savings. This milestone signifies our commitment to providing lasting value for shareholders whilst fast-tracking the development of Kangankunde."
