Slovenia's population increased by more than 14,000 last year to 2.08mn, the statistics office said on April 25. The increase came on the back of a rise in the number of foreign citizens, whose number went up by more than 16,300.

Out of the ex-Yugoslav countries, only Slovenia and Croatia are part of the EU. Slovenia is the most attractive for workers thanks to its higher wages, which have attracted nationals of the other former Yugoslavian states.

Meanwhile, the aging population is one of the most serious challenges for Slovenia, which like the rest of Central and Southeast Europe is facing a long-term population decline. This is expected to increasingly burden the public finances, social care and pension system.

The number of citizens of Slovenia decreased by almost 2,300, while the number of foreign citizens increased by 13.4% to more than 138,000. The foreign citizens represented 6.6% of Slovenia’s population.

At the beginning of the year, the share of women among citizens of Slovenia was 51.2%; among foreign citizens there were 34.3% women.
