Hungary’s corporate and municipal green loan stock surpassed HUF 1.1 trillion (€2.8bn) at the end of the first quarter of 2026, an 11% increase from the previous quarter and almost 48% annual growth, according to K&H, Mfor.hu wrote.

Green financing now accounts for nearly 8% of total corporate and municipal lending. Real estate financing remained the main driver of growth, with green loans for property projects increasing by more than HUF80bn during the quarter. At the same time, energy storage emerged as a rapidly expanding segment, with related green lending rising from HUF1bn to HUF23bn.

Renewable energy projects remain the largest category, but the shift towards storage highlights growing corporate investment in energy-system flexibility and the efficient use of renewable power.

K&H sustainability head Levente Suba said companies were increasingly viewing sustainable investment not only as an environmental priority but also as a condition for long-term competitiveness and resilience.

Household green mortgage lending also continued to grow over the longer term, reaching HUF418bn at the end of Q1, up 19% y/y, although the stock declined by around 2% from the previous quarter. The share of energy-efficient, A-rated or higher properties among newly pledged homes also increased, although changes to Hungary’s energy-certification methodology from 2026 affect comparisons with previous years.
