Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered all-out search and rescue efforts after a fire at a shoe factory in Jinjiang, Fujian province, left almost 30 dead on July 10, Xinhua reports.
Xi also called for a full investigation into the cause of the fire and said those responsible must be held strictly accountable – a common response in case of industrial accidents in China.
He said a series of major workplace safety accidents since the start of the year highlighted the need for greater vigilance. Xi also urged local governments and relevant departments to draw lessons from the incidents, better balance development and safety, and strengthen workplace safety oversight.
International reports also indicate that senior management of the company involved have been detained and bank accounts frozen.
Early reports say the fire could have started on the ground floor before spreading.
Xi meanwhile was reported as calling for a comprehensive review of safety risks and hidden hazards, strict implementation of safety measures, prevention of major accidents and stronger protection of lives and property.
The confirmed death toll had reached 28 by early July 11 with an unknown number injured.
