A Turkish man named Kahraman K. has taken over Turkey-based company Shurak Al Ajdad Gayrimenkul Turizm Insaat by forging the signatures of the owners, local news portal Patronlar Dunyasi has reported.
Shurak, a unit of Kuwaiti real estate developer Tamdeen, was the legal owner of a 164,446-square-metre (sqm) land plot located alongside the Canal Istanbul megaproject. The plot straddles the Arnavutkoy and Bahcesehir districts in Istanbul.
Forged sign-off
In April, Kahraman K. allegedly took over the company on the basis of a board decision with the use of the forged signatures of the owners, namely those of Khaled Issam Ahd Almarzooq and Mohammad Mad Almarzooq.
The former is a business development manager at Tamdeen while Mohammad is the CEO.
Kahraman K. published the takeover decision in the Trade Registry Gazette.
Woke up to events
The officials of the company in Turkey woke up to what was occurring when Kahraman K. attempted to sell the land plot. They informed the owners in Kuwait.
Appointed trustee
Lawyers of Khaled and Mohammad Almarzooq filed a complaint at a local court.
The court froze the company’s assets and bank accounts. It also appointed a trustee to the company management.
Exploiting jailing of Imamoglu
The controversial Canal Istanbul megaproject is designed to slice through Istanbul to connect the Black Sea with the Marmara Sea. The idea is to provide an alternative route for shipping that presently uses the natural Bosporus strait, which lies around 30 to 40 kilometres (19 to 25 miles) to the east.
On April 17, Ekrem Imamoglu, the jailed mayor of the city and an arch opponent of the project that critics say will wreak devastating environmental damage, wrote on X that the government was exploiting his jailing to speed up Canal Istanbul work.
“Those who have turned the judiciary into an apparatus continue to betray the nation with new operations, blindly trying to remove the obstacles in front of whomever they have marketed the Canal Istanbul to,” he wrote in a tweet on April 25.
Sold to Gulf investors
The project was first announced in 2011. Since then, land plots surrounding the planned canal have been marketed to Gulf investors.
Qatari Emir’s mother
In 2018, Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani’s mother, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, bought a 44,000-sqm plot of land located in proximity to the project route.
