An Atomic Energy Agency of Uzbekistan delegation met with Wei Fuqi, general director of China National Nuclear Corporation Overseas (CNOS), at EXPO 2024 in Shanghai, with the parties striking agreements to raise bilateral nuclear technology cooperation and boost Uzbek uranium production with China’s support.
The delegation, led by Uzatom’s director Azim Akhmedkhadjaev, and CNOS agreed to explore the use of nuclear energy, including a potential role for small modular reactors (SMRs) made by China.
The "small nuclear" technology, often commended for its scalability and efficiency, is gaining interest globally. Russia earlier this year agreed a deal to build Uzbekistan its first nuclear power plant (NPP). It will feature six SMRs.
“Our talks with CNNC signal a major step forward in building Uzbekistan’s nuclear capabilities,” said Akhmedkhadjaev.
Wei emphasised China’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations across all areas of nuclear technology.
Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has identified his country’s untapped uranium reserves as a resource to be harnessed for long-term economic growth. He has remarked on the “vital role” of nuclear energy in Uzbekistan’s future.
Uzatom is currently analysing global SMR technologies, including those offered by CNNC, for potential integration into Uzbekistan’s energy infrastructure.
CNNC is reviewing investment opportunities to bolster Uzbekistan’s uranium extraction and processing capacities.
