Ukraine is now a country of elderly people, with the lowest life expectancy in Europe, with many regions experiencing a rate of over four deaths for each birth annually and worse.
The war has catalysed a demographic crisis that was already well underway. Ukraine has the worst demographics in the world. The UN anticipates that the population will fall from a pre-war high of 46mn through the estimated 26mn people in the country today, but fall further to 16mn by 2050 due to the extremely low fertility rates.
A recent survey by sociologists found the situation in some regions, especially those in the east of the country, is already catastrophic:
◦ Kherson Region: 12.2 deaths per birth
◦ Donetsk Region: 11.2 deaths per birth
◦ Zaporizhzhia Region: 5.1 deaths per birth
◦ Sumy Region: 5.1 deaths per birth
◦ Kharkiv Region: 4.9 deaths per birth
◦ Chernihiv Region: 4.7 deaths per birth
◦ Dnipropetrovsk Region: 4.1 deaths per birth
