British energy trader Centrica has delivered its first LNG cargo to Honduras, the UK firm announced on August 10.

The cargo delivery marked the first of six LNG cargoes that Centrica will deliver to Honduras per year as part of a 15-year contract signed in November 2025.

The London-headquartered company will deliver the cargoes to commodity trading firm Exodus, which serves as the logistics facilitator and manages the delivery of the super-chilled fuel on the Honduran Caribbean coast.

The LNG deliveries will be conducted through a ship-to-ship operation into the Bilbao Knutsen floating storage unit (FSU) located at Puerto Cortes, which is about 50 km north of San Pedro Sula, Honduras’ second largest city.

The long-term sales and purchase agreement (SPA) marks the Central American country’s first-ever gas imports to be used for power generation.

The super-cooled gas will be used to power the Brassavola Combined Cycle Power Plant. Currently, the facility has a capacity of 150 MW, but it is being expanded to 240 MW with the development of a combined cycle facility.

The project will serve as a central pillar in Honduras’ quest to diversify its energy mix and will help the country to reduce its dependence on carbon-intensive fuels such as coal, as Tegucigalpa strives to meet its climate goals.

The FSU will play a key role in providing LNG storage infrastructure for a new import terminal, which is currently being built on Honduras’ Caribbean coast. Secure supply of LNG will also support the country in its move to increase industrialisation of its economy.

Centrica is in the midst of expanding its LNG-linked gas portfolio. The FTSE 100 company inked a long-term natural gas supply agreement with Canadian gas producer Peyto Exploration & Development in June.

The agreement will see Peyto supply about 50,000 mn British thermal units per day of natural gas, equivalent to around 0.5 bn cubic metres per year for a 10-year period starting in 2029. The volumes are equivalent to about five LNG cargoes per year.
