The Israeli military struck and killed Al Jazeera journalist Anas Al-Sharif in Gaza City on August 10, with the IDF claiming he was a Hamas operative posing as a journalist.

Al-Sharif, 28, was killed when a tent for journalists outside the main gate of al-Shifa hospital was struck. He had reported extensively from northern Gaza for Al Jazeera Arabic.

The al-Shifa hospital director said four journalists were killed in what appeared to be a targeted attack by IDF forces, uploaded to the social media platform X.

"Anas Al-Sharif served as the head of a terrorist cell in the Hamas terrorist organisation and was responsible for advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops," the IDF said in a statement.

The military said it had previously disclosed intelligence and documents found in Gaza Strip confirming his military affiliation to Hamas, "from which the Al Jazeera network has attempted to disassociate itself".

"The documents include personnel rosters, lists of terrorist training courses, phone directories, and salary documents for the terrorist, and provide unequivocal proof that he serves as a military terrorist in Hamas in the Gaza Strip," the IDF statement said.

The Israeli military added that the documents "also provide proof of the integration of the Hamas terrorist within the Qatari Al Jazeera network".

The IDF said before the strike, "steps were taken to mitigate harm to civilians, including the use of precise munition, aerial surveillance, and additional intelligence".

"The IDF will continue to operate against the terrorist organisations in the Gaza Strip," the military statement concluded.
