Anti-Vucic protests in Serbia continue for tenth week

Protests against the regime of President Aleksandar Vucic were held across Serbia on February 9 for the tenth consecutive weekend.

The “1 of 5 million” protests have been organised every Saturday since December 8 and were sparked by attack on an opposition politician Borko Stefanovic in the town of Krusevac. They further escalated after Vucic said that he would not agree to protesters' demands even if there were five million people in the street.

The biggest protest was held in the capital Belgrade, where thousands of people rallied against a climate of "political violence" created by Vucic and his Serbian Progressive Party.

Protests were also held in other towns and cities, including Novi Sad, Nis, Kragujevac and Cacak.

A march was held also in Kosovo, in the central town of Gracanica populated mainly with ethnic Serbs.

The first protest in Kosovo took place on February 2 in the divided northern Kosovo town of Mitrovica.

Vucic has been accused of stifling media and autocratic regime. He denied accusations of manipulating the media. 

On February 7 Vucic started his campaign a "Future of Serbia”, which is seen as a hint of a snap election possibly in spring.

According to opinion polls, Vucic would likely win another mandate.

The next general vote is scheduled for 2020.
