Annual inflation in Russia slowed to 8.79% in July

Annual inflation in Russia eased to 8.79% in July from 9.4% in June, despite a month-on-month acceleration in consumer price growth, according to Rosstat, Vedomosti reported on August 13. (chart

Prices rose 0.57% in July compared with 0.20% in June, bringing cumulative consumer price growth for January–July 2025 to 4.36%.

Rosstat said prices for fruit and vegetable products fell by 7.1% last month. Table beets dropped 26.1%, white cabbage 21.5%, potatoes 21.1%, cucumbers 16.1%, tomatoes 9.2%, carrots 7.6% and bananas 6.4%. Price increases were recorded for apples, up 3.8%, oranges by 3.1% and lemons by 0.9%.

A decline was also reported in chicken eggs, which fell 5.5%, olive oil 1.8%, granulated sugar 0.8%, butter 0.5% and sunflower oil 0.2%. Among cereals and legumes, rice fell 1%, buckwheat and millet 0.8%, and semolina 0.6%. Oatmeal and pearl barley rose 0.7% and Hercules oat flakes 0.5%.

Meat prices showed mixed trends. Pork increased 1.4%, beef and pork liver 1.1%, canned meat 0.8%, and beef, chicken legs and poultry-based culinary products 0.5%. Dry-cured sausage fell 0.8% and turkey meat 0.5%.

Other notable increases included chocolate, up 1.5%, coffee 1.4%, cocoa 1.2%, natural canned and pickled vegetables 1.1%, cognac 1%, honey 0.9%, dry seasonings, spices and packet soups 0.9%, margarine, fortified wine, mineral and drinking water 0.8%, beer, marshmallows, pastilles and ice cream 0.7%, gingerbread 0.6% and soft chocolate-coated candies 0.5%. The cost of catering services rose 1.1%.

On August 6, the Ministry of Economic Development said deflation in Russia had continued. “During the week from July 29 to August 4, prices fell by 0.13%,” it reported. The ministry added that the decline in food segment prices had accelerated to 0.34% week-on-week, with fruit and vegetable prices down 4.6%.

Rosstat recorded a 0.05% weekly drop in consumer prices in the periods July 22–28 and July 15–21.
