Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt has been named the first official ambassador for Expo 2027 Belgrade.
President Aleksandar Vucic welcomed the eight-time Olympic gold medallist to the Serbian capital on June 17, calling his visit “a great honour for Serbia.”
The President added that 115 countries have confirmed their participation in the upcoming specialised exposition, which will be held under the theme “Play for Humanity – Sport and Music for All.”
The event, scheduled to run from May 15 to August 15, 2027, will take place in Surčin, a suburban municipality west of central Belgrade. The expo is serving as a major driver of infrastructure development across the Serbian capital.
Bolt, who holds the world records in the 100 metres, 200 metres and 4x100 metre relay, will play a key role in promoting the international event.
As part of the preparations, Belgrade is undertaking an ambitious urban renewal effort. Key projects include the construction of a new 52,000-seat national stadium, a redesigned Belgrade Fair complex, a 1,500-unit residential development and a host of cultural and recreational facilities, including museums, theme parks and an aquatic centre.
Organisers hope Bolt’s global appeal and iconic status in the world of sport will help draw international attention and participation to the expo.
Expo 2027 will be the first specialised world exposition hosted by Serbia and the Western Balkans.
