Turkey's electronic communications companies increased sector investment by 80% to TRY94.1bn ($2.36bn) compared to 2023, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced on July 4, Habertürk reported.

Uraloğlu evaluated data from the annual market bulletin prepared by the Information Technologies and Communication Authority, highlighting technological developments driving investment growth.

"We can observe a 5.6-fold increase in operator investments between 2020-2024," Uraloğlu said.

The number of electronic communications subscribers in Turkey rose from 118.6mn in 2020 to over 131.9mn by end-2024, representing a 1.7% annual increase. Internet usage in Turkey reached 88.8%, exceeding the global average of 68%.

Broadband subscribers increased from 82.4mn in 2020 to over 96.4mn in 2024, with annual average growth of 3.5mn subscribers. Fixed broadband subscribers grew from 16.7mn in 2020 to 20.5mn, averaging approximately one million new subscribers annually.

Mobile broadband subscribers rose from 65.6mn in 2020 to 75.9mn by end-2024, with average annual growth of 2.5mn subscribers. Fixed broadband penetration increased 0.9% year-on-year whilst mobile broadband penetration grew 2.3%.

Fibre subscribers reached 8.1mn, doubling from four million in 2020 with 102.5% growth. Fibre network length expanded 42.3% from 424.9 kilometres in 2020 to nearly 605,000 kilometres in 2024.

Mobile subscribers exceeded 94.3mn, with 4.5G subscribers reaching 87.66mn by end-2024. The 4.5G penetration rate reached 102.3% nationally and 123.3% in major cities including Istanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Bursa and Antalya.

An average of 10.6mn mobile numbers were ported annually between 2020-2024, with total portings rising from 147.3mn in 2020 to 190mn in 2024.

Fixed telephone subscribers declined from 12.45mn with 14.9% penetration in 2020 to nine million subscribers with 10.6% penetration. Call origination traffic decreased 10.7% from 5.7bn minutes in 2020 to 5.1bn minutes in 2024.
