Talks have begun over a public support package for steelmaker ArcelorMittal Poland’s plant in Dąbrowa Górnicza, with the government considering a PLN1bn (€230mn) allocation for the plant’s modernisation, Deputy Speaker of the Sejm Włodzimierz Czarzasty told a press conference on June 9, according PAP.

The proposed package would support a revamp of the southern Polish facility, one of six operated by ArcelorMittal in the country. The plant is known for producing 120-metre-long rails – a coveted product due to the expected sharp increase in railway investment in Poland in the coming years.

“We have started discussions, including with the Ministry of Finance, on how to support the [plant],” Czarzasty said.

“We are aware that this is a private company, but we want to ensure that one of the blast furnaces is upgraded, that steel production remains [ongoing], and that the plant continues to operate in Dąbrowa Górnicza,” Czarzasty also said.

Czarzasty, who also leads the New Left party, a part of the incumbent four-party coalition led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, also stressed that maintaining domestic steel production was strategically important amid rising global tensions.

“Relying on imported steel from countries that do not adhere to EU environmental standards is not a proper alternative,” Czarzasty said.
