Consumer price growth in Slovakia increased by 3.8% year-on-year and by 0.4% month-on-month in May.
This is slightly down on the 3.9% y/y inflation registered in April amid rising fuel prices in connection with war in the Middle East.
“Food prices increased m/m, although they remained lower on average than a year ago,” Slovak statisticians highlighted in their report on the figures.
“By contrast, price growth in transport slowed compared with April, reflecting developments in fuel prices. However, transport still contributed significantly to overall y/y price growth,” statisticians also wrote.
Prices in the food and non-alcoholic beverages basket rose by 0.3% y/y in May, while in transportation prices were up by 9.4%, which was the highest growth level since November 2022. “This result was driven primarily by a significant year-on-year increase in fuel prices of 19.7%, the highest rate since October 2022,” statisticians noted.
Price growth of 6.7% y/y in the housing and energy basket had the most significant effect on the overall development, including the acceleration of energy prices to 28%. Price growth in the alcoholic beverages and tobacco basket moderated to 3.7%.
In m/m terms, prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages rose by 0.6%, while in housing and energy it was 0.5%. Transport prices were up by 1%.
From January to May, consumer price growth was 3.8% y/y.
