The Bangladesh Hindu minority community faced renewed violence on the night of January 6 2026, when a 40 year old grocery store owner Moni Chakraborty was hacked to death in Narsingdi district late on the same day. Police said the incidents marked the latest escalation in a series of attacks that have left six people dead in recent weeks, Times of India reported.
According to Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad, at least 51 incidents of communal aggression have been observed in the country since December 18, 2025.
Chakraborty was attacked near Charsindhur Bazar at about 11 pm as he returned home after closing his shop, local police officers said. He collapsed at the scene and was taken by residents to Palash upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead.
Earlier that evening acting editor daily BD Khabar, Rana Pratap aged 45 was killed by unidentified gunmen in Kapalia Bazar in Jessore district. Local authorities confirmed that Rana had been named as an accused in a murder case.
India's Ministry of External Affairs again urged Bangladesh’s interim government to ensure safety of Hindus and other vulnerable groups. Vocal condemnation of the fatal violent incidents have also been expressed by all sections of India including most major national political parties and their leaders.
Traders from Charsindur Bazar formed a human chain under the banner of the local market association calling for immediate identification and arrest of the killers. The organisation said community members were increasingly fearful as homes and businesses of minorities were attacked in Chittagong and Pirojpur districts during December 2025.
