Russian airlines are maintaining their flight schedules to Iran despite escalating tensions in the Middle East, Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) announced on August 6, Interfax reported.
Russia’s announcement comes amidst a sharp increase in regional tensions following two high-profile assassinations last week. Ismail Haniyeh, head of Hamas' political bureau, was killed in Tehran, while Fuad Shukr, a senior advisor to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in Beirut.
"As of now, no NOTAMs (Notices to Air Missions) restricting the use of Iranian airspace have been issued," Rosaviatsia stated via its official Telegram channel.
“Should the situation change, Russian carriers will be immediately notified,” it added
Aeroflot and Nordwind Airlines continue to operate direct flights between Moscow, St Petersburg, and Tehran.
The ongoing Russian flights stand in contrast to some international carriers' decisions. Lufthansa, Germany's flagship airline, suspended flights through Iranian and Iraqi airspace on August 5, citing security concerns.
Rosaviatsia said it is committed to monitoring the situation closely and ensuring the safety of Russian air carriers and passengers.
The continuation of flights follows the visit of Russian security official Sergei Shoigu, who visited Tehran on August 5 for discussions with officials.
The timing of the visit is critical for Iran as it prepares its retaliation against Israel for the death of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, who is believed to have been killed by a hidden explosive in his high-security accommodation placed by Israel's spy agency Mossad.
Iran and Hamas has officially blamed Israel for Haniyeh's death and said it would "avenge" him.
Since the announcement, US and Israeli targets have been hit in Iraq and northern Israel on August 6.
