Romania’s GDP per capita 42% above pre-crisis level in PPP terms

Romania’s GDP per capita calculated in purchasing power parity (PPP) terms for 2017, increased by 41.7% (by 3.9% per annum) versus 2008 compared to the 14.6% (1.5% per annum) average advance in the EU28 area, Eurostat informed.

Consequently, the GDP per capita in Romania at purchasing power parity increased by nearly 12pp to 62.5% of the EU28 average. Following the 10% increase in the index last year, Romania overtook Croatia to rank now as the third poorest European Union country (with Bulgaria as the poorest one).

In terms of individual consumption per capita at PPP, Romania’s position improved as well.

In nominal terms, the GDP per capita in Romania lags at 32% of the EU average. The figure increased by 34% (by 3.3% per annum) since 2008, to €9,563 in 2017.

By individual consumption per capita, Romania’s position improved even more since 2008: the index increased by 43.8% (by 4.1% per annum) and it measures 67.3% of the EU28 average.
