India's Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) recorded gross loans outstanding rising 10.3% y/y in 2025-26, climbing from approximately INR524bn ($5.47bn) to more than INR578bn, India's Ministry of Finance said, underscoring the sector's expanding role in rural credit delivery, according to a report by All India Radio.
The ministry said RRBs continued strengthening their contribution to rural economic development and financial inclusion by expanding credit access while maintaining a strong focus on Priority Sector Lending (PSL).
Nearly all RRBs met their overall PSL targets during the year, reflecting sustained institutional commitment to supporting sectors including agriculture, small businesses and rural enterprises. RRBs extended credit worth INR3.49 trillion to weaker economic sections during the year, India's Ministry of Finance noted, reaffirming the sector's role in ensuring equitable access to institutional credit for underserved rural borrowers.
The consistent growth in both overall credit and priority sector lending suggests RRBs are playing an increasingly significant role in India's broader financial inclusion strategy, complementing efforts by public and private sector banks to extend credit access across rural and semi-urban markets.
With India's government continuing to emphasise financial inclusion as a policy priority, sustained expansion in RRB lending is likely to support broader rural economic activity, particularly as these institutions remain a key channel for delivering credit to weaker sections and priority sectors that may face limited access through conventional banking channels.
