Ukrainian ports have set a new wartime record for container handling, processing 134,191 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) in the first eight months of 2025, according to the Association of International Freight Forwarders of Ukraine, reported Ukraine Business News.
The figure exceeds the entire 2024 total of 129,902 TEU, representing a 3.3% increase. Of last year’s volume, exports accounted for 66,892 TEU, imports for 63,042 TEU, and transit cargo for 4,257 TEU.
“Despite war, shelling, and global logistics challenges, Ukrainian ports continue to demonstrate resilience and steady growth,” the association said. The performance, it added, shows businesses that Ukraine’s ports remain reliable even under crisis conditions, able to handle both export and import flows.
Viktor Berestenko, head of the association, said more than 60% of value-added and finished product cargo continues to transit through Baltic ports, underlining the challenges to restoring pre-war capacity. “The goal is 200,000 TEUs. Even after surpassing a million TEUs in 2021, there is still work ahead,” he said.
Experts argue that reaching higher throughput levels will require streamlined customs procedures for transit and imports, along with faster cargo processing.
