Moldova achieved temporary electricity self-sufficiency on August 23, when domestic renewable generation fully met national demand, the Ministry of Energy announced in a Facebook post.

At 12:00 on that day, electricity imports fell to only 0.5 MW, according to the ministry, citing data from the country’s electricity system monitoring platform.

“The monitoring platform of the electrical system has recorded this absolutely remarkable result - The electricity consumption of the Republic of Moldova has been FULLY covered by the Local Energy Production, from Renewable Sources!” said the ministry’s Facebook post. “At the mentioned time, only 0.5MW of energy were imported.”

Moldova's energy supply was severely hit in January, after Russia terminated the gas supplies to the country. While most of Moldova, namely the areas under Chisinau’s control, had switched to natural gas purchased from the free market, it was still at that moment dependent on affordable electricity provided by Transnistria, its separatist pro-Russian region that was using the entire amount of gas supplied until January 1, 2025 by Gazprom.

By the end of June 2025, Moldova’s installed renewable capacity had reached 765.9 MW, an increase of 76.7 MW compared to the previous month and 186.5 MW higher than at the end of 2024.

Solar energy accounts for the majority of installed capacity, totalling 529.39 MW, or 69% of the total. Wind energy follows with 212.58 MW, representing 28% of capacity.
