All five trapped workers at Codelco's El Teniente copper mine in Chile have been found dead after rescue teams cleared more than 24 metres of underground passages that collapsed following a strong tremor last week, regional prosecutor Aquiles Cubillo said on August 3.

Andrés Music, general manager of Codelco's El Teniente Division, and Mary Carmen Llano, vice president of People Management, confirmed the discovery of four deceased miners and reiterated that the fifth worker was still being sought at the time of their earlier statement.

"I want to begin by addressing the family and friends of our colleagues. We are pained by the death of Gonzalo Núñez Caroca and the other workers found lifeless. We share this pain and unite as a community in this very difficult moment," Music said.

The executive reported that three additional bodies were recovered during the early hours, adding to one found the previous day. "All these rescues have been carried out with close collaboration from the regional prosecutor and the PDI [police], who have led the identification process and evidence handling. One still remains to be formally identified," he added.

Music highlighted the work of emergency response teams, thanking the brigade members, teleoperations equipment operators, PDI, prosecutor's office, health teams providing psychological support, union leaders, workers and the community. "But above all, every Chilean man and woman who has accompanied us with their solidarity," he said.

Llano focused on family support, stating they had been with families throughout the night in a meeting space established at El Teniente, providing support, companionship and care. "This has been a night of mourning, not only for the families, but for Codelco, for mining and for Chile," she said.

The latest fatality brings the total death toll from the accident to six, including one person who died at the time of the incident on Thursday evening. Music reaffirmed Codelco's commitment to continue working "with the same dedication and without rest until finding the last of our colleagues."
