Lithuania is preparing to roll out a nationwide network of 44 cybersecurity operations centres as part of an ambitious push to bolster the country’s digital resilience, the defence ministry announced on its website kam.lt on November 17.
The plan is to have regional hubs operating in every county within three and a half years. Officials say the scheme will help strengthen cybersecurity across the public sector by improving detection, logging and response to attacks, as well as identifying vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.
The first step is already under way in the Siauliai region, where local authorities earlier this year signed an agreement with the NKSC to create a shared security operations centre – the first such facility in Lithuania.
According to Siauliai municipality, the centre could be up and running by the end of the year under what it called an “optimistic scenario”.
The new hub is expected to employ four specialists providing cybersecurity support to seven municipalities, from incident response to routine monitoring.
Under the national plan, the NKSC will provide the necessary hardware, software and training and will assist in managing serious cyber incidents. Municipalities will supply the premises and cover staffing.
