At least five people were killed and three others injured after an explosion tore through a migrant gathering point near the Afghan-Pakistan frontier, highlighting the worsening humanitarian crisis in the border region.

The blast struck on the evening of September 18 evening in Chaman, a Pakistani border town, at a taxi stand where Afghan migrants and local residents had assembled, according to Deputy Commissioner Habib Bangalzai, The Khaama Press News Agency (TKPNA) states. Rescue teams arrived soon after, but officials confirmed that five people had been killed at the scene, while three critically wounded individuals were taken to Chaman’s government hospital.

TKPNA adds that a bomb disposal unit collected evidence at the site and early assessments suggested that an improvised explosive device had been concealed among passengers’ belongings according to Pakistan’s Express Tribune.

The incident comes against the backdrop of Pakistan’s mass deportations of Afghan migrants, which have forced thousands of families to abandon their homes and livelihoods. Many are still stranded at the border according to local media. Conditions at the frontier have deteriorated sharply, with overcrowding, food shortages and insufficient shelter compounding the risks for returnees.
