The Egyptian government has allocated EGP6bn ($123.6mn) for the implementation of the first phase of a strategic land connection project with Libya, Asharq Business reported on August 4, citing a government source.

The connection project spans 100 kilometres within Egypt's territory and forms part of the larger East Oweinat–Kufra Road, which aims to connect Egypt, Libya and Chad via a 1,720-kilometre highway.

The project serves as a vital artery for trade and economic integration, connecting Egypt, Libya, and Chad, and aims to promote regional cooperation, commercial exchange, and development.

The East Oweinat–Kufra corridor is a major transnational infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing regional connectivity, trade and integration between North and Central Africa. The whole route will be divided into three main segments: 400 kilometres within Egypt, 390 kilometres in Libya and 930 kilometres in Chad.

According to the government official, the Ministry of Transport, which owns and oversees the project, is preparing to hand over the site to construction firms. Groundwork is expected to begin in Q3 2025, with an estimated implementation period of three years.

The total cost for the Egyptian section of the project is expected to reach EGP24bn upon full completion.

Experts believe the new project will enhance economic cooperation between Egypt and its southern and western neighbours, whilst supporting development in remote border regions.

The initiative represents a significant investment in cross-border infrastructure aimed at facilitating trade and movement between the three African nations. The highway is expected to serve as a crucial trade corridor linking North Africa with Central Africa, potentially boosting economic activity in previously isolated border areas.

The project demonstrates Egypt's commitment to regional integration and its strategic positioning as a gateway between different parts of the African continent.
