BioLite has acquired a controlling stake in African solar distributor Baobab+, strengthening its position as a vertically integrated provider of off-grid renewable energy solutions, Baobab+ announced in a press release.
The New York- and Nairobi-headquartered BioLite has taken majority ownership of Baobab+, a distributor of off-grid solar kits in Africa, through the purchase of a controlling stake from Baobab Group, the Paris-based financial services company that founded Baobab+ in 2015. The acquisition consolidates their longstanding partnership and expands BioLite’s presence in key African markets.
Baobab+ has equipped more than 425,000 households with solar solutions and digital devices for educational and professional use, relying on pay-as-you-go financing to improve affordability. The company operates in Senegal, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Madagascar, providing smartphones and solar kits that enable off-grid communities to access lighting, charging and connectivity services.
By acquiring majority control, BioLite reinforces its role as a vertically integrated supplier, drawing on its existing portfolio of clean-burning stoves, solar generators and lighting products. Founded in 2009, BioLite has developed a reputation for serving both energy-poor communities and outdoor users worldwide. The acquisition forms part of BioLite’s broader strategy to deepen market penetration in Africa and scale its operations through integrated supply chains.
Norfund, the Norwegian state investment fund, remains a minority shareholder in Baobab+, following its investment in 2021 to support sustainable energy access initiatives. A joint statement from BioLite and Baobab+ noted that the transaction enables Baobab Group to refocus on its core financial services activities, targeting small businesses and underserved communities across the continent.
“With BioLite’s innovation and Norfund’s support, we are entering a new era—scaling with purpose, deepening our local impact, and delivering sustainable energy solutions across Africa,” said Kolawole Osinowo, Chief Executive Officer of Baobab+, in the statement. “We also remain deeply grateful for Baobab Group’s unwavering support over the years; their dedication has been crucial in expanding access to energy and digital solutions for underserved communities.
