US President Donald Trump has said he would not allow Israel to annex the West Bank whilst Israeli forces prepared to broadcast Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's UN speech to remaining Palestinians in Gaza via loudspeakers, according to separate Israeli reports on September 26.

"I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank. Nope, I will not allow it. It's not going to happen," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, Reuters reported on September 25.

"There's been enough. It's time to stop now."

Trump's comments came as Netanyahu was arriving in New York to address the UN General Assembly on September 25, with Netanyahu's office saying the prime minister would wait until returning to Israel to address the remark.

Following Trump’s comments, the Prime Minister's Office instructed the Israel Defence Forces to broadcast Netanyahu's UN speech live to Gaza Strip residents, The Times of Israel reported on September 26.

The PMO later clarified that loudspeakers would only be placed on trucks on the Israeli side of the Gaza border.

"The Prime Minister's Office instructed civilian entities, in cooperation with the IDF, to place loudspeakers on trucks on the Israeli side of the Gaza border only," the PMO said, describing it as part of a "public diplomacy effort."

Military sources expressed opposition to the original plan, which would have required soldiers to enter Gaza areas putting them at increased risk. "It's an insane idea," one senior officer told Haaretz.

"People from across the political spectrum are asking, 'What is this delusion?' No one understands what military benefit there is here."

The Kan public broadcaster reported that soldiers from the 99th Division were preparing loudspeakers to play Netanyahu's speech to Gaza residents, later confirmed by social media.

Trump's West Bank comments followed meetings with Arab leaders who warned about grave consequences of annexation.

About 700,000 Israeli settlers live among 2.7mn Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

A controversial Israeli settlement plan known as the E1 project, which would bisect the occupied West Bank, received final approval in August, with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich saying a Palestinian state was "being erased from the table."

Trump said he spoke with Middle Eastern representatives and Netanyahu about a potential Gaza deal, with the US having presented a 21-point Middle East peace plan to regional leaders.
