South Africa’s Cell C launches its first broad band in Port Elizabeth

Port Elizabeth will be thefirst SA city to use the 900MHz commercial 3G network, a 900MHz radio frequencyband, which Cell C hopes will give it an edge against competitors MTN andVodacom. With Cell C using the lower frequency of 900MHz the signals penetrateconcrete and other barriers more effectively giving far better in-buildingcoverage. Cell Cs entry into broadband raises speculation of a potential pricewar as Cell C may slash the cost of broadband down to ZAR 50./GB against the competitionof ZAR 200/GB on top end data contracts. The 3G network roll-out will bestaggered on a region by region basis.
