The Estonian Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) issued a public safety warning following the sighting of a bear in the Nomme district of Tallinn on May 8, ERR.ee reported on May 9.
At around 5:30 a.m., a PPA patrol spotted a bear near Rahumae Cemetery in the leafy residential suburb south of the city centre. Approximately 10 minutes later, a member of the public contacted emergency services after seeing the animal running through the area near the Nomme ski centre.
Authorities are urging anyone who sees the bear to call the emergency number 112.
“A wild animal can behave unpredictably, especially in an unfamiliar urban environment. We recommend avoiding the area and taking children to school by car. If you encounter a bear, keep away, avoid eye contact, and back away slowly while staying quiet,” said Karl Kalda, field chief at the PPA’s Western Harju station, ERR.ee reported.
By 9 a.m., a PPA spokesperson confirmed that police and rescue teams had searched the area around the Nmme ski tower and nearby Vana-Mustamae and Glehni Castle. However, the bear was not located, and with no further sightings reported, the active search was discontinued, ERR.ee reported.
