Iran has officially banned the use of skates, skateboards and scooters in public spaces, a move that authorities argue is necessary to ensure road safety and prevent accidents.

A traffic police officer declared in a television programme on May 5 that riding these vehicles in undesignated areas violates traffic laws, with violators bearing full responsibility in the event of an accident.

According to official regulations, individuals are prohibited from riding skates, skateboards and scooters in general public spaces, except in locations specifically marked as authorised zones.

For children, responsibility for any accidents falls upon their parents, reinforcing a broader concern over safety and liability.

Internationally, laws governing skating, skateboarding and scooter riding vary significantly. While some countries allow their use on public roads under certain conditions, others strictly confine them to designated skate parks or recreational zones.

Many cities enforce restrictions on riding in high-traffic pedestrian areas to minimise risks. At the same time, some even classify these personal mobility devices as vehicles, requiring riders to adhere to local traffic laws.

The decision to impose a blanket ban in Iran comes in response to safety concerns, particularly in cities where heavy traffic and inadequate infrastructure make skating, skateboarding and scooter riding perilous.

However, the restrictions have raised concerns among enthusiasts, who argue that they could stifle recreational activity.

With limited designated areas for safe riding, especially outside Tehran, the ban could lead to the near-disappearance of skating, skateboarding and scooter culture in many parts of the country.
