Uzbekistan saw a sharp 2.4-fold m/m increase in electric vehicle (EV) sales to 4,240 units in September. It came despite the automobile market overall contracting by 1.1% m/m and 25.5% y/y, with 110,100 vehicles sold, according to a report from the Centre for Economic Research and Reforms.
The market for passenger cars edged down 0.3% m/m to 101,600 units sold.
September turned out to be a record month for EV sales in Uzbekistan.
The September sales of EVs compared to 1,700 bought by consumers in August. Of the 4,240 EVs sold in September, 3,180 EVs were sold in Tashkent.
September EV sales were also up 17% y/y.
Tashkent region and Andijan recorded 285 and 119 EVs sold, respectively.
On the secondary market for used vehicles in September, sales fell by 6.3% m/m and 38% y/y, with sales amounting to 60,500 units.
New car sales, however, provided a silver lining, with demand in the primary market increasing by 10.3% m/m to 41,000 units.
Sales of imported vehicles moved up by just 4.5% in September, down from the 25.6% gain experienced in August.
It was earlier reported that Uzbekistan imported 12,913 EVs valued at $166.8mn from January to August, with China supplying 12,840 of those vehicles.
