Uzbekistan’s Muruntau gold mine has ranked second on a Kitco list of the world's 10 largest gold mines.
Basing its ranking on gold extraction volumes in 2022, base metals website Kitco said the mine, located in Uzbekistan’s Navoi region, was runner-up to Indonesia's Grasberg mine. Muruntau took first place in 2020 and 2021.
Muruntau’s extraction tonnage was approximately 53.1 tonnes last year, the ranking showed.
The mine stretches over a length of more than 3.3 kilometres, spans 2.5 km in width and reaches a depth of nearly 600 metres. The gold reserves and resources of Muruntau surpass 4,687.5 tonnes.
