The number of tourist overnight stays in Macedonia increased by 22.4% y/y to 71,043 in January, reversing a 2% annual drop in December, according to data of the statistics office. Overnight stays of domestic tourists rose by 17.4% y/y to 36,710 in January, reversing a 12.3% y/y drop in the previous month. Overnight stays of foreign tourists increased by 28.2% y/y to 34,333 in the first month of 2012, accelerating from 10.4% y/y in December. The number of tourists rose by 20.1% y/y to 33,748 in January, reversing an annual drop of 4.4% a month earlier. The January figure includes 15,845 domestic tourists (up 12.9% y/y) and 17,903 foreign tourists (up 27.3% y/y). The largest numbers of foreign tourists came from Greece (3,715), Albania (1,915) and Serbia (1,792). A certain number of tourists and their overnight stays remain unregistered and not included in the above figures since these tourists stay in private rooms, cottages or with relatives and friends. |
